Who was the Peacemaker of the Iroquois?

I was thinking more in depth today about the Iroquois' Great Law of Peace and the Constitution.  I began wondering: the Great Law begins with "I am the Peacemaker..."  Then I questioned, "who was the Peacemaker?"

I did a bit of research and I found the Haudenosaunee Confederacy website.   There, I found something specifically on the Peacemaker.  It'd be great if I had your thoughts on this, click on the link, read the Peacemaker story and then come back to tell me, what connections can you make to the Peacemaker story?

  3. I think that this story is very interesting. Why? Because it stared with one man who believed in a new concept, called peace. He united five nations that had been previously fighting. He created the Great Law of Peace, a fair statement of laws for the Iroquois people. If only we had a person like the Peacemaker that came to the colonists in colonial times.

    Aidan-
I think that it i very interesting that you are related to John Smith. But I wanted to mention something. I have heard of many smith names. Imagine of all those smiths were related to John Smith, or part of the tree. Just thought you might like to think about it. My last name, Rifkin, started out as Rivint, and other variations of that. It went from Rivkint, to Rivkind, to Rifkind, to Rifkin. It means children of Rifka, of Rebecca. Some one named Rifka created my last name. My family history is very complicated

  4. Steph: I really enjoyed this story. It took him so long and it was so difficult to unite the Haudenosaunee that he could've given up, you know? This is an inspiring story because it goes to show that one person can make a HUGE difference. He, the Peacemaker changed things around for the Iroquois people for EVER...and, lets remember, if it weren't for him the Great Law of Peace would've never been written and who knows what would've happened with the Constitution! That's an even scarier thought!

Aidan: It is so cool that you may be able to trace your family ancestry all the way back to John Smith. My family ancestry cannot really be traced but I have fun with Fred's. Except, we lose track at a certain point. We may have to go to Germany to figure that out. It will be fun!
