The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner
by Deborah Ellis
In class, our unit is Material World; we're studying economy and world social issues.  Our read aloud book is The Breadwinner.  It is set in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.  The Taliban have prohibited girls from going to school and women from going to work.  They have also set up other laws that effectively silence women.

It is important to understand the dangers in Parvana's life. Malala Yousafzai, is a 15-year-old Pakistani girl, education activist and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize nominee.  She was targeted for assassination by the Taliban after campaigning for women's rights and education in her native Pakistan. She survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban.

Below, is her story - drawn out to help illustrate just how dangerous it is to be female under the Taliban.

There are many connections to be made between Malala and The Breadwinner.  For example, her name!  In The Breadwinner, Parvana's father shares with the family the story of a brave young girl named Malalai.  Malalai is a national folk hero who was said to have helped rally the Pashtun army against British troops during the 1880 Battle of Maiwand.  In Afghan history, she is said to have battled alongside the troops and responsible for the Afghan victory on July 27th, 1880 (Wikipedia).   Although Malala is from Pakistan NOT Afghanistan the children immediately made connections to the fighting spirit both seem to share.

Question:  Are there any connections you can make between Malala and Parvana?

  2. I see some similarities with Parvona and Malala. Parvona and Malala can't go to school and both don't have the same rights as the boys and men. They cant talk out side nor are they suposed to be out side. Imagen not being out side.....

  4. Parvana and Malala are similar by doing very brave things, although they know they can be punished severeley or killed. A difference though is that Parvana poses as a boy while Malala gets an education. I admire both of these characters because they both set their minds to something and do it, even though is us dangerous.

  5. Parvna and Malala and connections that they have. First of all they both believe in Civil Rights for women in Afghanistan. They both have great courage and spirit to fight for whats right. But theyve both been severely hurt by the the Taliban, first Malala was shot int he head by a Taliban and Parvana lost her father by the Taliban. These are some connections that Parvana and Malala have.

  9. yes there are questions between Malala and Parvana. when the Taliban raided Parvenas house Parvana and her mother protected thier father and made the Taliban go away. Malala and parvana stood up for thier rights becouse the Taliban banned girls to not go to schoolparvana And MAlala stood up for themselves by geting educated. Girls Women dont have the same rights as Boys And Men especialy out side the same with Malala

    1. Parvana and Malala have sort of the same lives because they both live in the same place and want education. They wish they had the same rights as men and boys. they also have other problems, like Malala has been shot in the head and Parvana's dad is in jail. I feel bad for both of them.

  11. I think making Parvana look like a boy is smart...but risky. Looking like a boy but not actuly being one is a way to make money. When Parvana finds shasia i think she is not alon. I think the bred winer is grate. So is Sr.Raff.
